#tdc1447: Name something that you want to do before the clock runs out
The Daily Create
I've never been a student to focus on graduation, or the end of the year as my overall goal. Rather I try to focus on one assignment at a time. This way the school year becomes less overwhelming, and I can stay focused on the task at hand.
In the classroom, I would encourage my students to consider this as an "academic goal" to finish school one assignment at a time. By working on your academic career "one assignment at a time," you are able to achieve your best work since the pressure of graduation or passing the class, or grade is removed. When the pressure to excel in every aspect of your academic career is removed, students are able to produce quality work because they have only one sole task at hand.

#tdc2082 Heart-Breakingly Beautiful
The Daily Create
This activity to look at something that is usually considered "ugly," but then to depict it in a way so that it is beautiful is an excellent activity for a classroom to partake in. In this activity the students are forced to reconsider the societal norms of beauty, as they seek out something beautifully ugly. Once the students take the opportunity to look at something in a new light, they can experience the idea that beauty is subjective. This can be used to outline the dangers of bullying, and how looking at someone or something in a new light may change your perspective. Therefore students can obtain first hand experience on how subjective beauty can be, and they will hopefully learn that although something is not aesthetically pleasing at first sight, maybe looking closer will change the student's mind. Much like how first impressions are not 100% defiant of a person, and that maybe looking closer at a person may change how we see them.

#tdc2087 First Time for Everything
The Daily Create Today's Daily Create featured a challenge to reimagine a common item, as if it had never been created. The challenge asked us to design the item how we would design it, if we were the first to create it. As well we are asked to provide an explanation of the item to others, determine who would use it, and name it. We also needed to sketch the new design. This activity would be great for a creative outlet in a classroom, that may be feeling a little too "bored." This will challenge students to reimagine common items, which may give them an outlet it improve things that they already see/use. As the students have the chance to become inventors, without the pressure of reinventing the wheel, they will build their confidence to think outside the box. This activity can be used to expand common items, or even to expand classroom activities. For example, the students could use this mentality to "reimagine" their classroom lessons to better suit their creative needs, while nurturing their educational needs. |
I chose to reimagine a Toaster.
It would look like: A clear cube with 2 slots on the top, and dials on the front. How I'll explain it: This magical, clear cube will warm your bread/bagel/poptart/etc. You can decide what degree of "toastiness" you desire by turn the dials on the front accordingly. Additionally the cube is clear so that you can watch your bread/bagel/poptart/etc. get toasted. Who will use it: Anyone who desires warmed carbs! If you prefer warmed bread/bagels/poptarts/etc. then this cube is for you. What will I call it?: "The Un-Breader" |

#tdc1921 Build a Rainbow
The Daily Create
This activity asks students to look for a set of objects that come in a variety of colours, and then set them up in a rainbow. Students will be able to use this in an art class, as they explore colour in the world around them. It would be a new way to find colour in the world as they set up objects in the pattern of the rainbow, which will demonstrate that they know the colours and the pattern as well...

ROY. G. BIV!
For this create, I used emojis to create a rainbow. This will encourage students to technology to find art and colour, which is something that students may be new to.
#tdc2121 Doubles
The Daily Create The challenge today is to find doubles somewhere in the world. This could be used to have students look for patterns outside of the classroom. They will be on the look for exact duplicates, or it can be expanded to including seeing multiples in general. Examples could be a v formation of birds in the sky, a line of ants on the ground, or a display of the same vehicle along a car dealership lot. For this create, I chose to use the "Double Rainbow" video from 2010. The YouTube user that published the video, Yosemitebear62, cannot contain his excitement about finding a double rainbow. |

#tdc1942 Plausible Animal Alternative Fact
The Daily Create This challenge was to create an image that displayed an "almost" true animal fact. This activity is an interesting turn on animal biology and facts, as students would be able to adjust animals facts individually, and then they could come together as a class to correct those facts to be true again. It allows students to explore their creative sides as they learn about different animals. Also the class could use an activity like this to determine which facts are real or not, by using critical thinking to eliminate false facts. For this create a made a cartoon using a free comic building website using templates they had provided. Then I made a "false fact" built from the common idea that ships travel in herds. |
#tdc2031 Add Harry Potter to an Academic Paper
The Daily Create
This challenge was to put the phrase "Harry Potter and" in from of an academic paper's title. This is a creative and fun activity to bring into the classroom, as a light hearted distraction from finding research. Although this is not necessarily an academic process for finding research, it could be a fun alternative to searching for academic papers when writing a report. For this challenge I searched through the Lakehead library to find an academic article that started with "The"

#tdc1696 Everybody Dance!
The Daily Create The challenge of this create was to record yourself dancing, and giving the dance a "unique name." However instead of using a video of myself dancing, I chose to use a video of Jimmy Fallon and Will Smith doing unique hip-hop dances together in a video from the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. This challenge is a fun way to get students moving either in the classroom, or at home. This challenge could be used in a physical education class to encourage students to make dances that get them moving, and the fun part of the challenge would be to come up with a clever name for the dance. |

#tdc1553 PowerPuff Yourself
The Daily Create This challenge was to make an avatar using PowerPuffYourself. It allows you to customize the character to look like yourself, and then you complete a short personality quiz at the end. After completing the quiz it generates a personality trait about yourself based on the answers to the quiz. This would be a fun activity in the classroom to allow students to create an avatar of themselves based on how they perceive themselves. After completing the quiz at the end, students would be able to reflect on the personality traits the quiz determines belongs to each student. They can either agree or disagree with them, and then try to consider times in their lives that they may have embodied these personality traits at some point in their life. |
#tdc1557 Streetview an interesting spot in the world you may never visit
The Daily Create
This challenge was to find a place in the world using Google Earth's Street View, and make it a place you may never visit. Students could pick places that they wish to visit, or places that they hope to never visit. This is an excellent way to explore places throughout the world, without leaving the classroom. Students can do this activity either as a class, or individually on their own time or in class. Google Street View is a user friendly website, that is easily accessible using different outlets whether it be computer, phone, tablet, iPods, etc. Therefore it should be a challenge that students would be able to complete either using classroom technology, or personal technology. For the challenge I found an image using Google Street View of downtown New York. It is a place I have always wanted to go, but I don't see myself going there in the foreseeable future.
